I heard him on the radio Ne me quitte pas sing, that must have been around 1960, when I was fourteen, and I listened breathlessly to the song ended, and then ran to the record store, but they have not yet had the plate and I let them order. Since then, the music of Jacques Brel not disappeared from my life. I've never seen him live, but his performances were called the (black and white) television and then we were repeatedly moved to tears by his music, his lyrics, but especially by his incredible prsence. Jacques Brel was not just a singer like there are so many, he was the rare exception. He sang his touching and disturbing chansons when Flanders was still away from Bobbejaan Schoepen and his Duivekot.
Although he was a lot older than me, I thought of him as a peer, who played feelings I knew mine, in a modern, credible manner quite different from what we got when heard on the radio, our only source of music . Brel was not only different, he was authentic, real. The power of his songs do not lay as many listening songs of the time, the rebellious or amusing text, but especially in the poignant music, which he spent alone on guitar or with his trusted musicians: piano, flute, accordion , a trombone, a bass, drums. In the Flemish and Dutch cabaret focused the glades online on small. What brought Brel was always great.
